Joe Montana
Montana had a rocky start at Notre Dame. His freshman year was spent mainly as a benchwarmer for junior varsity. But as a sophomore, he began to developa reputation for keeping a cool head under fire. In his sophomore year, Montana shared quarterbacking chores with junior Rick Slager, and came off the bench to replace an injured Slager in the third game of the season, leading the Irish to a 31-7 victory. He missed much of that year with a seperated shoulder, but in his junior year he became a starter three games into the season, replacing Rusty Lisch. By the end of that season, he received an honorable mention on the associated Press All-America team. In his senior year, Montana came into his own. He became the third Fighting Irish quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Career Stats
